I drive an old 2005 Jeep (TJ) Wangler Sport, which in Utah is great for both playing in the red rock deserts and in the alpine mountains. Of course, I have a ham radio rig in the TJ

The Rig:

Yaesu FT-400XDR:
a 50W dual band (VHF / UHF), dual display, and dual standby transceiver; with GPS and APRS. Nice readable color touch-screen LCD display even in sunlight.

The rig is mounted to the Jeep TJ using a Rugged Ridge 13551.09 CB Radio Dash Mount, which is a solid screw in mounting bracket for the TJ. I fabricated an aluminum mounting plate for the radio and head unit. So far there have been no over-heating or other issues related to mounting the rig the dash in the full sun.

The Jeep Wangler environment is not particularly radio friendly. The rig receives power via a 10gu, 3 conductor, shielded cable. Further, every major metal body part and exhaust section is bonded with 1" braided strap. The presence of the jack and tools on the hood, do not seem to adversly affect the perfomance of the Tram antenna. Easily reach local repeaters and the The Intermountain Intertie from anywhere in the state of Utah.
